Garden High Tea

The History of High Tea

In the 1840, Anna, the Duchess of Bedford is said to have complained about feeling faint during the late afternoon as supper was often late into the evening.

The Duchess's solution was a pot a tea and a nibble of something delicious, taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon.

Loved by the Duchess, she invited her friends to join her. The Duchess continued it when she returned to London, setting a trend among fashionable society of sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches in the middle of the afternoon. This was called "Afternoon Tea" or "Low Tea".

To confuse the situation, High tea was taken after work (in the UK) and became associated by Americans as the afternoon tea specialty taken by the British.

Now, High Tea is a British tradition, and has become a celebratory status. We especially love it when taken in the garden on a warm summers day.
